Level 1 Geography

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms Lesienaivalu.

The Year 11 Geography course will offer a view of the physical and cultural (human) world. We will look at interactions between people and the world in which we live. Year 11 Geography will cover issues that we face at national and global levels as well as looking at solutions to these issues. We will be identifying perspectives and how we can adopt new technologies to improve the world around us. We will investigate 4 main themes (Weather and Climate, Extreme Natural Events, Population and Enviromental management)

Level 1 Geography involves the detailed study of topics including:

  • Natural hazards such as Cyclone Gabriella and Tonga eruption: Plate tectonics, extreme natural events, such as earthquakes, volcanoes, tropical cyclones and tsunamis
  • Different populations such as China, New Zealand, Pacific Islands: migration, distribution and density
  • Global Population: Megacities such as New York, Tokyo and Lagos.
  • Our local environment: Auckland and the Hauraki
  • Modelling of tsunamis and urban issues.
  • Weather and climate patterns.
  • Local and global river environments
  • Conducting geographic fieldwork – understanding and studying weather
  • Study of a New Zealand or Pacific geographic challenge
  • The skills and knowledge Geography students acquire at this level will help them at Level 2 Geography

Field trips are an important part of the Geography curriculum. There will be at least one day trip (with added costs) during the year to support learning.
