Year 10 English

Course Description

Year 10 English is the stepping stone to success at NCEA Level 1. Students who can master the skills required in Year 10 English will have developed a strong foundation for doing well in their NCEA Studies. The course covers all three strands of the English curriculum - oral , visual and written. Students are given the opportunity to develop their skills through creating their own pieces of written, visual and oral texts and also responding to a range of texts. 

Course Overview

Semester 1
The first half of the year involves students using their creative writing skills and also responding to a range of short texts both poetry and short stories. Students also learn about purpose and audience in writing and have the opportunity to show their understanding through their own written work.

Semester 2
In the second half of the year the main topics covered are a research assignment. Students have the opportunity to develop their research skills . Also in the second half of the year students study a film and build on their knowledge of techniques associated with film.
