Course Description

This course is a leading way for those wanting to go on to future tertiary education. We will give you the foundation to build critical thinking about our language and culture and also in your everyday lives and protocols of our language and culture. This course will involve learning how to form formal sentences and structures. Students will gain knowledge of Samoan by developing skills in listening, spoken presentation, reading and writing. Of the five Standards offered to students, 3 will be assessed internally and 2 will be externally assessed.
Course Overview
Semester 1
In Semester one the emphasis is on producing a spoken presentation (4 credits) and the writing (5 credits) of two different text types in a structured way using their knowledge of Samoan. Students can communicate information, ideas and opinions through their spoken and written texts. They are also expected to express and respond to personal ideas and opinions.
Semester 2
In Semester two, the emphasis is on Interaction (5 credits) and preparation for the external examinations. The Interaction standard is a portfolio and students will submit two interactions on two different topics. Students will use spoken Samoan language to communicate personal information, and justify ideas and opinions in different situations. Interaction strategies must be used to sustain interaction. Skills of Reading, listening, making notes from listening texts, and writing winning answers will be emphasized.
Recommended Prior Learning
Completion of Junior or L1 Samoan or have prior knowledge of spoken and written Samoan.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
Students are expected to participate and contribute to Samoan Language week activities and other Samoan cultural group events
