Course Description
The aim of Geography is to develop an understanding of the environment as the home of the people. Geographers do this by looking for things that make up the natural and cultural environment and then see how these affect each other.
Reasons for studying Geography:
- It fosters a balanced view of and respect for the environment at home and around the world.
- It helps you to understand the things that have influenced our heritage, and that are important to today’s environmental and planning issues.
- It develops many skills and techniques (thinking, practical, social and valuing)

- Geography takes us into the world around us where nature and people collide.
Geography is recognised as a useful qualification for a wide range of careers. Some of the hundreds of different jobs geographers are working include: Resource Planner, GIS Analyst, Conservation, Wildlife Management (DoC), Logistics & Transportation, Teaching & Education, Resource Management (Ministry of Environment, Climate and weather based careers (NIWA), Maori Research & Development (Ngai Tahu), Travel & Tourism, Airlines Flight & Crew Ground, Mining & Exploration, Diplomatic Service, Export & Trade etc.
Specific skills learned:
Resource interpretation of maps, photographs, diagrams, cartoons, images, models, films, text and internet search.
Resource construction skills to create multiple forms of complex presentations which include visual, spatial and statistical combined.
Social skills in working with others and appreciating different values and perspectives.
Communication skills in presenting information as an essay, power point presentation, SOLO graphic organisers.
