Course Description

This course focusses on the strands of Statistics and Probability and will enable study of mathematics beyond secondary level. This course comprises of both Internal and External standards that contribute to the total credits.  This course is a University recognized subject, contributes to Numeracy  and is eligible for Course endorsement.  It requires a good level of thought and comprehensive literacy skills. 


Course Overview

Semester 1
In semester 1 300MAS course is about the report writing. The following standards will be taught and assessed.

A.S. 91580 v2 Mathematics and Statistics 3.8 - Investigate time series data
A.S. 91581 v2 Mathematics and Statistics 3.9 - Investigate bivariate measurement data
A.S. 91582 v2 Mathematics and Statistics 3.10 - Use statistical methods to make a formal inference

Semester 2
In semester 2 the focus is on Externals and the following standards will be taught.

A.S. 91585 v2 Mathematics and Statistics 3.13 - Apply probability concepts in solving problems
A.S. 91586 v2 Mathematics and Statistics 3.14 - Apply probability distributions in solving problems

Recommended Prior Learning

Students must meet the following requirements to be able to take 300MAS course.

  • Have attained Level 2 NCEA and have Numeracy
  • Must have achieved at least 12 Maths credits at Level 2
  • Must pass one of the following externals at Level 2
   AS91261-  2.6    Apply algebraic methods in solving  problems           4 credits           External
 AS91262 - 2.7 Apply calculus methods in solving problems                  5 credits           External
