Level 1 Lea Faka-Tonga

Course Description

This course will involve learning to write, to speak, to read and to converse in Tongan language relatively well. An important component of the course is learning about their culture and key events in the history of their nation. Students are expected to understand and produce more complex language. They can communicate using present, past and future tenses. Students can understand and produce a variety of text types. Skills of Reading, speaking, listening, writing, conversing, presenting, expressing and justifying own opinions will all be taught.  There will be 3 Standards assessed as Internal Assessment and students will choose only TWO to do depending on their strengths. The other two standards will be externally assessed in November. 


Course Overview

Semester 1
In Semester one the emphasis is on producing a speech and two pieces of writing (in different text type) in a structured way. Students are expected to produce more complex language instead of simple sentences, communicate using present, past and future tenses. Sharing and justifying information and ideas are also important.

Semester 2
In Semester two, the emphasis is on Interaction and preparation for the external examinations. The Interaction standard is a portfolio and students will submit two interactions on two different topics. Students will share and justify their ideas and opinions in their interaction. Interaction strategies must be used to sustain interaction. Skills of Reading, listening, making notes from listening texts, writing winning answers will be emphasized.

Contributions
Students will be expected to volunteer to participate in the Tongan Language Week Celebration and Polyfest (if a group is put together)

1 Exercise book
1 Tongan - English dictionary (if possible)
2 Black or Blue and 1 Red pens, pencil and a pack of colored pencil

Recommended Prior Learning

  • Learning Tongan in the junior Year 9 & 10. 
  • Have prior knowledge of the Tongan  language
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn
