101ESOL

Level 1 English as a second Language

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms Paljk.

This course is for students who have grown up speaking Tongan, Samoan or another language and who are learning English. It improves your English language skills, so it will help you in your other subjects at school, at work, and in your family and community. You can earn EL (English Language) credits at NCEA Level 1. (Some students may do assessments at Level 2 or 3 and Level 1 literacy assessments.) This course will develop your English reading, writing and speaking skills. It will help you to become bilingual (or multilingual). This means you will be able to use two (or more) languages for speaking, reading and writing.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

You need to bring a pen, a pencil and an exercise book (or Chromebook) to class. You also need your own public library card (which is free). There are no compulsory trips or fees, but you are expected to go to a public library in your own time and to borrow books and magazines from the library for reading homework.
