Course Description

The Year 9 English course links what students have learned at primary /intermediate school to the skills specifically needed to do well at NCEA level . The course covers all the main strands of the English curriculum - written , speaking and visual. Students have the opportunity to use their own skills to create texts but they also have the opportunity to respond to texts .
Course Overview
Semester 1
In the first half of the year students will have the opportunity to read and respond to a range of poetry and short stories. They also start to develop skills in comparing texts. Time is also spent on students learning about how language works particularly in poetry and short stories. Students also have the opportunity to learn about different types of poems and to create their own poetry.
Semester 2
In the second half of the year starts off with the students responding to slam poetry and then developing their own slam poetry. Following this work students complete a research assignment. The last topic before the end of year project is a film study. Students watch a film in class and are given activities which allo students to display their understanding of the film as a visual text.

Pathway
Year 9 English are the first steps in building the foundation skills towards NCEA . Students will cover a range of skills which they will then build on in Year 10.
