Course Description Recommended Prior Learning

The course has open entry though it is recommended that students have some background in history and have competent essay writing skills.


We are looking at a course which studies different types of government and political control. We will be looking at the following topics: Colonialism; New Zealand in the 19th Century; looking at early contact, the Treaty of Waitangi where we will demonstrate knowledge of the development of the New Zealand legal system in the 19th Century and how the wars and conflict eventuated leading up to the changes of the legal systems following the Treaty.  Totalitarianism; Germany under Hitler and the USSR under Stalin. We also study the Holocaust and the escalating persecution of the Jews by the Nazis. We will do a two night field trip to the Bay of Islands as part of the New Zealand aspect of the course.

Research Investigation – This allows students to work independently, using the inquiry process, to examine an event or place of historical significance.

This pathway provides students with knowledge and skills that are relevant for a wide range of occupations such as law, journalism, the media, politics, human resources, research, nursing, primary, secondary and tertiary teaching, medicine, management and many other careers.

This is an ‘approved subject’ for University Entrance. Standards marked (R) may be counted towards the Reading credits for Literacy. Standards marked (R/W) may be counted towards either (but not both) Reading or Writing credits for Literacy.
