Course Description Recommended Prior Learning

NCEA Level 2 English. Students should have achieved at least half the credits offered at NCEA Level 2 English  to be successful in this course.

This course is comprised of mainly internal credits with the opportunity to sit one external.  It is a full year course.  Students will develop reading and writing skills that will develop the capacity to critically analyse a range of text(s).  This course sets students up for further education because it thoroughly covers the written and visual/oral strands of English.  This course will allow students to gain 14credits they require for University Entrance.  Literacy in English gives students access to the understanding, knowledge, and skills they need to participate fully in the social, cultural, political, and economic life of New Zealand and the wider world.

Course Overview

Semester 1
This student is fully internally assessed. The year starts with a film study. Students then complete a piece of writing connected to their film study. This piece of writing goes towards the students' writing portfolio. Students then move onto creating a visual essay based on a text studied.

Semester 2
In the second part of the year students complete their visual essay and also their writing portfolio. They finish the year by delivering an oral text which is based around their aspirations for their future. If students complete all internally assessed tasks to the standard required they will achieve enough credits to go towards their UE qualification.
