Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

14 credits in Level 2 Sport Science/Physical Education

Playing for a school team would be beneficial and an interest in anatomy and bio-mechanical principles. 


This course follows the NCEA Level 3 guidelines and uses the knowledge gained in Levels 1 and 2. It is a university approved course. It is a highly academic course and would suit students who like to learn about physical education rather than just play sport.

Specific skills learned  

Examine an event, trend or issue and it's impact on NZ society. 

How to compare performance against national standards in a range of physical activities.

Analyse using biomechanics to improve a skill. 

Analyse saftey issues in OED

Evaluate Physical activity for life-long well-being.



Course Overview

Semester 1
Students will choose an event, trend or issue in an authentic context and examine it's impact on NZ society. eg: Polyfest, Fasting, NRL etc...
Choose a physical activity and perform a range of skills and tactics measured against a national standard and compare performance.
Analyse using biomechanics, skill aquisition, anatomy and movement to improve a skill.

Semester 2
Students will analyse a safety issue in an outdoor setting by visiting and identifying possible risks. Devise safety management strategies and evaluate its impact on society including • people (behaviour, experience, knowledge, attitude)
• environmental risks
• equipment school policies
• environmental sustainability (such as the environmental impact on conservation areas and ecosystems, application of the New Zealand Environmental Care Code, and so on)
• sociocultural factors (such as significant cultural sites for local iwi)• ethical considerations
• philosophical considerations (such as why outdoor education is an option for students)

Assessment for these standards will be a structured portfolio with options to present your work from the following formats.
> Written document in digital or paper based format including images and 750 - 800 words.
> Video or audio recording of 3-4 min.
> Combination of text, images, and audio / video recordings (equivalent combination of the above)
> Written report
