Year 10 Food Technology

Course Description

This course is a step up from Year 9 Technology. It focuses on the development of food related products, which address a technological problem. The course may use other materials or concepts from alternative technologies in an innovative way.  Students will apply their knowledge of the technology process to investigate an issue and develop an outcome which meets the requirements of an identified stakeholder or client. The research into their issue may include working in consultation with other learning areas of the school. Practical skills, product trials and the manufacture of the final concept form a major component of this course. Students will be required to present a portfolio documenting their process and providing evidence of their learning. Both practical product and portfolio contribute to assessment.

Semester 1
Food Safety and Hygiene- Safe Food Handling
Food and Nutrition- Factors Affecting Food Habits

Semester 2
Staple foods – Grains and Cereals for goodness sake! Staple food.
Fruits and Vegetables- Sources, Classification, Nutrients, Nutritional value
Food Around the World-Multi-cultural foods/foods from around the world

This course enables students to get a taste and achieve technological literacy and who may choose to take as an optional subject. The course prepares students for Year 11 Food and Hospitality where students will extend their knowledge and understanding, Technological Capability, Technology and Society and consolidate cooking skills preparing them for Year 11.
• It provides students an opportunity to join in Catering and Food Business.
• Pre-requisite for Level 1 Food Technology/ Hospitality and Catering
